Jack Michael Woodman

Our baby boy has arrived!

I was induced at 40 weeks 3 days and couldn't be happier with my labor experience.

Jack was born Thursday 1/28/10 at 7:03 P.M. after 10 hours of labor and an hour and 20 minutes of pushing. He weighed 8 pounds 5 ounces and was 20 inches long.

We checked into the hospital at 7:30 a.m. for our induction. Got settled into the room around 8:00 and started pitocin at 9:15. I couldn't feel the contractions so they kept turning it up. The OB came in around 11:30 and broke my water- which by the way was disgusting. I felt like I was just lying there while continuously peeing my pants! That got the contractions going and I finally started to feel them- they weren't too bad though. They just felt like really bad menstrual cramps.

Around noon, I asked for the epidural. The anesthesiologist was going to be in the OR for an hour doing a c-section and I chickened out and got scared that the contractions were going to start really hurting. So I went ahead and got my epi.

I was able to sleep for a few hours, but started having some sharp pains around my bladder so the anesthesiologist came back and pushed another shot of meds. That did the trick! I was so numb I could not feel anything from the waist down- DH and the nurse had to move my legs. It was actually pretty funny.

In the end I am glad I got the epi as early as I did because it really relaxed me and that is when I really started making progress. I was at 5 cm when they checked me at 8 when we got in our room and by 3:00 I was at 7cm. At about 5:30 I was 9 cm and the nurse said I could start pushing if I wanted. So we did a couple of practice pushes so I could get an idea of how and when to push.

I started pushing for real at about 5:50 and at 7:03 Jack Michael made his entrance into the world! I vomited five times during the pushing and the nurse said it was actually helping me because every time I vomited, my body naturally pushed him down. They also kept laughing because he was twisting his head back and forth the entire time I pushed. I guess at first the nurse could feel it but then as he got further down she could see his head.

The only part that I was a little bummed about was that there was meconium in the water so the NICU team was present at delivery. Because they needed to suction his lungs and make sure the meconium hadn't caused problems, I didn't get to hold him for 15 minutes. It felt like an eternity!

We are adjusting to being new parents- meaning we don't sleep! We absolutely love our little guy and cannot wait to watch him grow!
