We took Jack to the doctor yesterday because he's been pretty miserable lately. He has forceful, frequent spit-up, arches his back and screams while feeding and has a hard tummy. I looked through some of my parenting/baby books and started to think he might have reflux. Sure enough, I was right. Poor little guy! We ended up putting him on Zantac and we'll give it 2-3 weeks to see what kind of difference it makes. She said to expect him to be on it for 6-9 months =(
He also happens to have colic...which let me tell you is heartbreaking! He just cries and screams and there is nothing we can do. Sometimes holding him helps and sometimes his vibrating chair helps. He also really likes to have his pacifier. It hurts to see him so upset and know that as long as he is fed, changed, and not injured, then there is nothing else we can do. They said he will eventually outgrow it but to expect it to get worse before it gets better.
In better news, Jack is growing like a weed! He is now 10 lbs. 13 oz. and 23 inches long. He has been trying to hold his head up since the day he was born and he is getting really close! Even the doctor was impressed that he has almost gained control. He also managed to roll onto his side while we were there- which really impressed the doctor! When the nurses at my OB's office told me I would have my hands full with him (he was VERY active in utero) they weren't kidding! I can't believe my one month old is practically holding his head up and is already working on rolling over!

I hope that reflux is the answer, but keep an open mind do a dairy and/or soy allergy. We treated DS for reflux (zantac then prilosec), and it didn't really help. I cut out dairy...and the issue was still there, then soy, and he's perfect. Supplementing w/ Similac Alimentum or Enfamil has it's equivalent. DS is off all meds now b/c he was misdiagnosed. I hope the meds help, but just in case...this is often a likely culprit.
